In the realm of Olympic men’s ring competitions, China’s Liu Yang continues to set the gold standard.

The star gymnast successfully defended his gold medal from the 2020 Tokyo Games with another stellar performance at the 2024 Paris Games on Sunday. Scoring an impressive 15.300, Liu outperformed his Chinese compatriot, Zou Jingyuan, and Greece’s Eleftherios Petrounias.

Zou secured the silver medal with a score of 15.233, while Petrounias clinched the bronze with a score of 15.100.

Here are the full results:

  • Liu Yang, China: 15.300
  • Zou Jingyuan, China: 15.233
  • Eleftherios Petrounias, Greece: 15.100
  • Samir Aït Saïd, France: 15.000

  • Vahagn Davtyan, Armenia: 14.866
  • Harry Hepworth, Great Britain: 14.800

The contest between Liu and Zou was incredibly tight. As the reigning gold medalist, Liu faced tough competition from Zou, who had topped the qualification rounds. Both entered Sunday’s final with an identical difficulty score of 6.400, making execution the decisive factor.

Liu edged out with a slightly superior execution score of 8.900 compared to Zou’s 8.833.

Sunday’s competition was not just about the gold and silver medalists. Petrounias added to his extensive Olympic resume by securing the bronze medal with a difficulty score of 6.300. This score surpassed France’s Samir Aït Saïd, who had a difficulty score of 6.100, allowing the Greek athlete to make a minor error in execution and still win the bronze with a 15.100 score, just .100 points ahead.

Petrounias previously won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and bronze in Tokyo.

The three medalists stood out in a final that saw no American participants. Despite the United States’ women’s gymnastics dominance in Paris, no American athlete qualified for Sunday’s rings final.
