It was a formidable challenge, but the U.S. Women’s National Team delivered a crucial performance to secure a 1-0 victory over Japan in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics after a grueling 120 minutes of play.

As the match progressed, Japan showcased a style of play that the U.S. had yet to encounter in the tournament. The American squad struggled to build momentum as Japan’s defensive strategy involved sitting deep in their half and aiming to hit on the counterattack. The attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Mallory Swanson, and Trinity Rodman found it impossible to break through Japan’s resolute defense. Despite holding the ball for a significant 71% of the match—thanks to midfielders Lindsay Horan and Rose Lavelle—creating opportunities for the forwards proved challenging.

“This was a very tough match. It felt like a chess game,” Horan remarked. “That’s what we were just saying in the huddle after the game. Japan is an incredible team, and I feel for them.”

Both teams had nearly identical numbers of shots (15 for the U.S. and 12 for Japan), but Japan appeared closer to scoring as they tested the U.S. defense. Solid performances from Naomi Girma and Crystal Dunn were crucial in keeping the U.S. in the game.

After 90 minutes of frustrating play, the USWNT finally broke through in extra time. Rodman delivered a stunning goal in the 105th minute, cutting past a defender with her left foot before curling the ball into the top left corner of the net. It was a moment of maturity for the 22-year-old Rodman, who proved she could be a reliable player in crucial moments. She is now the youngest player in USWNT history to score in an Olympic knockout match.

“I remember exactly what happened,” Rodman said. “I entered the box, received a beautiful pass, and then took a shot. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust my shot, but at the same time, I couldn’t believe it. It was a defining moment in my career, one I’ll always cherish as the pinnacle of my professional journey.”

With this narrow 1-0 victory, the USWNT advances to the semifinals. In knockout football, it’s not just about how well a team plays, but also about how they secure the win. Japan tested the U.S. from start to finish, but head coach Emma Hayes believed that the composure and concentration shown by her team were key to achieving a favorable result.

“It was very tactical, which is why I enjoyed it so much. It was a game of patience and determination,” Hayes said. “It was decided by a brilliant moment. I really like Japan’s team and always enjoy watching them. They are an excellent team. Our defenders were outstanding today, and everyone in our team stuck to their task.”

The USWNT will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Canada and Germany.
