Who is Tim Walz? The progressive governor known for his surprising success in winning over Republican critics.

Minnesota’s Governor has captivated the internet’s attention, redefining how Democrats view Republicans: as peculiar. Tim Walz’s viral clip has even garnered him consideration for the Vice President spot alongside Kamala Harris.

Walz isn’t just “peculiar”; he’s effectively outlined Democrats’ aspirations and demonstrated what he’s accomplished as Governor during a banner time for Democrats in his state. His straightforward, practical communication highlights his party’s core policies.

Born and raised in small-town Nebraska, 60-year-old Walz began his career as a teacher in China, then Nebraska, and finally Mankato, Minnesota, where he taught geography and coached high school football. In 1999, he advised the school’s first gay-straight alliance, long before Democrats took a national stand on gay rights. Serving in the Army National Guard for 24 years, he was deployed across the country and Europe, joining at 17. Like J.D. Vance, Walz enjoys Diet Mountain Dew.

“Honestly, many politicians aren’t normal people,” said David Hogg, a gun control advocate and Walz fan. “They don’t know how to talk to regular folks.”

Walz’s image is that of a no-nonsense teacher and America’s youth football coach. Former Minnesota Republican Party Deputy Chairman Michael Brodkorb noted that Walz looks like a central casting Governor. Walz first ran for office in 2006 in a Republican-leaning congressional district, defeating the incumbent. He held the district until 2016, consistently beating Republicans. In 2018, he ran for Governor and won, then successfully defended his seat in 2022.

Now, as Chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Walz has gained national recognition, campaigning for Biden and now Harris. His presence has put him on the shortlist for Vice President, becoming a key figure for Democrats.

In Minnesota, Democrats achieved a narrow government trifecta in 2022, securing both legislative houses and the Governorship. Walz and his legislative allies swiftly implemented progressive policy wins like free school meals, abortion protections, gun control, and legal marijuana.

Minnesota exemplifies what Democratic governance could look like, but nationally, the policies might seem too liberal. When asked about this on TV, Walz humorously remarked, “What a monster! Feeding children so they can learn, and women making their own healthcare decisions.”

Hogg highlighted a recent speech by Walz, donned in a camo hat and T-shirt, as an example of his humility. This outfit, typical for Walz, drew online attention for not trying to look like a politician. One tweet humorously noted, “He could be running for VP or cleaning out the garage. It’s the weekend; anything’s possible.”

“Tim is a very straightforward guy,” said former Democratic U.S. Representative Tim Ryan from Ohio, who worked with Walz in Congress and worked out with him in the House gym.

Ryan recalled a clip where Walz mentioned Minnesota’s ranking among the happiest states. “Isn’t that the goal? Some happiness? When he mentioned it, I thought, man, that’s really good because it takes us out of the political space into a human space.”

This reflects a shift in Democrats’ mood since Joe Biden announced he wouldn’t run again. There’s less focus on the dire consequences of re-electing Trump, although those consequences are still a motivation, and more on what Democrats aim to achieve if they win.

“Fear and anger are low vibrations,” Ryan said. “It’s just a negative vibration. And I think what Tim spoke to was hope and the expectation of what’s coming and what we’ve achieved. We can do more. It’s optimistic, a higher vibration.”

Ryan and other former House members are excited to see Walz in the spotlight, encouraging his selection as VP. House Democrats are reportedly advocating for Harris to choose him.

Former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp said Walz’s authenticity makes his straightforwardness effective. Comparing him to Trump’s VP pick, she noted, “There’s an inauthenticity about J.D. Vance that’s the opposite of Tim Walz. Tim is the most authentically regular person you’re going to meet, and his background is uniquely suited to these times, especially for people in my part of the country.”

Heitkamp and Walz got to know each other flying between D.C. and the Upper Midwest. She immediately understood his character and felt it applied across the Midwest.

She noted, ‘The moment I met Tim Walz, I could instantly tell he had great character.’ “I didn’t have to question his principles or his goals. I understood his agenda because I had teachers like him—dedicated to their students and deeply invested in their community.” Progressive Minnesotans, who sometimes clashed with Walz on policy, still backed him. Elian Farhat, executive director of TakeAction MN, said that while she and her organization disagreed with Walz over the years, he responded to feedback and evolved.

She pointed to his changing stance on guns as an example. Walz, a gun owner and hunter, once supported and received donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA), earning an A rating. But after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, he donated the NRA money and supported an assault weapons ban following the 2018 Parkland shooting. As Governor, he signed gun control bills into law, now holding an F rating from the NRA.

“We’re not electing saviors. We’re not electing perfect people. We’re electing people we can make tough decisions with, negotiate with, and who are serious about working for people. And Governor Walz has shown that very strongly over the past few years,” Farhat said.

Walz’s biggest drawback—and an advantage for other VP contenders like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro—is his geography. Minnesota isn’t a swing state, though Trump claims he can win it. However, replacing Biden at the top of the ticket likely takes the state out of contention.

Republicans will also highlight the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s murder by police, connecting Walz, then Governor, to the aftermath.

Yet, his teaching background and experience representing a congressional district that generally votes Republican strengthen his case. “I mean, if you’re looking for the blue wall, Tim Walz embodies that,” Hogg stated.

And Walz can win. His electoral record shows his ability to build a coalition of progressive to moderate Republican voters, Brodkorb noted. After winning, he has shown he knows how to achieve results.

“Winning over skeptics and capturing support in traditionally Republican regions is ingrained in his political nature,” Brodkorb remarked.

Even if Harris doesn’t choose Walz for the ticket, his message of change continues. The term “peculiar” remains. The Harris campaign has used it. “It really got under the Republicans’ skin, which I think indicates how effective it is,” Brodkorb said.

Trump himself responded to the accusation. “No one has ever called me peculiar. I’m many things, but I’m not peculiar.”

Heitkamp remarked, ‘Before Tim Walz labeled Trump as peculiar, nobody had used that term to describe him.’ “And it resonates because he is peculiar. I mean, anyone who talks about Hannibal Lecter isn’t normal behavior. I think there have been people who’ve tried to intellectualize Donald Trump, and Tim just cut through that and said, ‘This guy isn’t normal. He’s peculiar.'”

While Trump’s reps spend their time “cleaning up aisle five,” Walz talks to voters about his Minnesota achievements and what Democrats envision for the country, Heitkamp said. This message resonates with the base but also appeals to voters struggling with childcare costs and tuition—issues Walz has addressed in his state.

“Being anti-Trump can’t be the Democratic message,” she said. “The Democratic message has to be that we’ll govern differently from Republicans.”
