According to records from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Chicago rapper and Englewood native Lil Durk, whose real name is Durk Banks, was arrested in Florida on Thursday over alleged conspiracy to commit murder. Banks, 32, was detained at Broward County Jail early Friday, though details surrounding the charges remain undisclosed. Attempts to reach Lil Durk’s representatives for comment were unsuccessful.

Banks’ arrest came on the same day federal prosecutors in California announced charges against five others linked to Chicago gangs in connection with an attempted murder of Georgia rapper Quando Rondo, born Tyquian Terrel Bowman. That incident, a shooting at a Los Angeles gas station in August 2022, resulted in the death of Quando Rondo’s cousin, Savion Robinson.

The indictment lists the following individuals: Kavon London Grant, Deondre Donatrel Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsay, and Asa Houston. The charges encompass conspiracy to commit murder for hire, actual murder for hire, and employing a machine gun in a violent crime leading to death. Convictions on these severe charges may result in a death penalty sentence.

Prosecutors allege that all five individuals are affiliated with the “Only the Family” (OTF) collective, a hip-hop group founded by Lil Durk and also known as OTF. Prosecutors indicate that credit cards linked to OTF were used to pay for flights and rental cars.

Lil Durk founded OTF more than a decade ago, during a time when Chicago’s drill rap scene was gaining international attention. Federal prosecutors state that OTF primarily engages in producing and selling “hip-hop music by Chicago artists.”

In 2020, Chicago drill rapper FBG Duck was fatally shot in a high-profile shooting on Oak Street, leading to federal conspiracy convictions against multiple individuals earlier this year. Earlier this month, FBG Duck’s mother filed a lawsuit alleging Lil Durk, OTF, and King Von were involved in that incident. The suit claims that OTF operates as a criminal enterprise.

Lil Durk stands among the most successful drill rappers emerging from Chicago since the genre gained traction. Popularized by other artists such as Chief Keef and G Herbo, drill is characterized by its intense, often violent lyrics that frequently reflect gang rivalries — and sometimes escalate beyond them.
