Jake Paul to Face Off Against Boxing Legend Mike Tyson in Netflix Event on July 20

Must read

Jake Paul rose to fame in the world of sports when he defeated former NBA player Nate Robinson in an undercard exhibition boxing match with Mike Tyson in 2020.

Now, YouTube sensation Paul and former heavyweight boxing champion Tyson are set to meet again – as opponents – in what promises to be the most anticipated spectacle of recent crossover boxing craze.

Officials have informed ESPN that in the main event of the card broadcasted on Netflix, Tyson will face Paul in a boxing match at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 20th. This will be the streaming company’s first foray into combat sports and the third live sporting event overall. According to MVPI CEO Nakisa Bideranian, Most Valuable Promotions (MVPI) entered into an agreement with Netflix for a boxing card on November 1st.

Bideranian said in a statement, “Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is a dream match-up that happens once in a lifetime, and I hope this modern boxing spectacle becomes the most watched boxing competition in recent history.”

It is not clear yet how the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees combat sports in the state, will approach what is certain to be a bout that will attract considerable scrutiny and attention. It has not been determined whether it will be categorized as a pro-fight or as an exhibition.

Tyson remains one of the greatest – and most fearsome – heavyweight boxers of all time. However, at the time of the fight, he will be 58 years old. Paul, at 27, is three decades younger than him.

On November 28, 2020, when Tyson fought Jones to a draw in an exhibition boxing match, he looked in good shape and also appeared well in social media training videos. Tyson has not fought professionally since 2005 and was stopped twice before wearing gloves again. Born in New York City, this boxer was an undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990.

Tyson’s recent statement has stirred up excitement among boxing enthusiasts. Reflecting on Paul’s evolution as a boxer, Tyson intriguingly stated, “It’s fascinating to witness a young contender’s drive and ambition merging with the seasoned expertise of a veteran.” This convergence promises a riveting spectacle, akin to Tyson’s journey from starting on Paul’s undercard against Roy Jones Jr. to potentially concluding his career alongside him.”

Paul (9-1, 6 KOs) has defeated former UFC stars such as Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley after knocking out Robinson in a high-profile main event. The Cleveland fighter has since aimed to fight those boxers who possess the aura of competing for a world championship to gain more experience. Paul, who turned professional just four years ago, is coming off consecutive first-round knockouts against Andre August and Reynaldo Borland.

Paul said in a statement, “It’s crazy to think that I went viral for beating Nate Robinson on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones and now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson himself.” “Now, after less than four years, I’m stepping up to face Tyson himself, to see if I have the capabilities to defeat one of boxing’s most infamous warriors and biggest icons. Within just two and a half years of establishing MVPI, we are creating the biggest fight in history, a fight in America’s biggest NFL stadium, which will be broadcast directly, on the world’s biggest streaming platform – it’s a testament to all that we have achieved in such a short time.”

Last year, Paul took the spotlight in an exciting episode of the acclaimed Netflix series “Untold.” As Netflix boldly expands its horizons into the realm of live sports, viewers have been treated to thrilling competitions like the Netflix Cup, pitting Formula 1 drivers against golfers, and the intense Netflix Slam, showcasing riveting tennis matches. These ventures mark an intriguing evolution for the streaming giant.

Netflix’s Vice President of Nonfiction Sports, Gabe Spitzer, said in a statement, “Mike Tyson is one of the biggest icons in boxing history and Jake Paul is one of the biggest disruptors in boxing history.” “Saturday, July 20th, will be pure drama in Texas. We are thrilled to partner with the most valuable promotion for this historic event and cannot wait to present this face-off between the two in front of Netflix’s fans around the world.”
