PARIS – Italian boxer Angela Carini entered the Paris Olympics driven by a heartfelt mission: to secure a medal in memory of her late father and coach, who tragically passed away soon after competing in the Tokyo Games three years prior.
However, Carini’s journey in Paris was cut short after just 46 seconds. Her match against Algerian rival Imane Khelif ended abruptly, with blood stains visible on her trunks, leading her to withdraw from the bout.
Although Carini insisted she was not making any political statement against Khelif, who had been disqualified from last year’s World Championship due to an unspecified gender eligibility test failure, her withdrawal reignited debates about Khelif’s status.
Who is Angela Carini?
Angela Carini, 25, competes in the 66 kg (145.5 lbs) welterweight category. In 2019, she achieved impressive silver medals at both the World and European Championships, and also secured gold at the European Youth Championship. Despite her strong record, she lost her initial fight in Tokyo.
Nicknamed “Tiger” by her father Giuseppe, Carini’s background is rooted in sports. Before boxing, she was an Italian champion in clay pigeon shooting, following in her brother’s footsteps who also transitioned from shooting to boxing.
What Happened in the Fight Against Khelif?
The bout saw a brief exchange of punches before Carini, in a rare occurrence for Olympic boxing, decided to retire from the match. She did not shake hands with Khelif after the referee’s formal hand raise, instead dropping to her knees and crying in the ring.
Carini’s actions sparked widespread discussion about Khelif’s eligibility to compete, given her previous disqualification. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni even brought up the issue with IOC President Thomas Bach during a meeting in Paris. The IOC has repeatedly defended Khelif’s right to compete.
Why Did Carini Withdraw?
A tearful Carini explained that she withdrew due to the pain from Khelif’s initial punches, stating her nose was bleeding profusely. “My face and nose were hurting. I couldn’t breathe anymore. I thought about my family, saw my brother in the stands, and decided to retire. I’ve never been hit so hard before,” Carini told the Italian sports daily, Gazzetta dello Sport.
Carini clarified that her decision was not premeditated. “This entire controversy makes me sad,” she said. “I genuinely empathize with my opponent. If the IOC has deemed her fit to compete, I fully respect their decision.”
Apology and Reflection
After the bout, Carini expressed regret for not shaking Khelif’s hand. “It was never my intention,” she clarified. “I genuinely want to extend my apologies to her and everyone affected.” I was angry because my Olympic dream was shattered. I hold no grudge against Khelif. In fact, if I see her again, I will hug her.”
