Michigan's Uncommitted Vote Movement Surpasses Expectations, Advocating for Change in Biden's Approach

President Biden may have won the Michigan Democratic primary, but for some voters who disapprove of his handling of the Israel-Gaza conflict, Tuesday night was about sending a strong message: adapt or face potential backlash in the upcoming general election.

According to results reported by the Associated Press, as of 5 a.m. Wednesday, over 100,000 votes had been counted for the uncommitted option on the Democratic ballot.

Biden maintains over 80% of the total vote, with nearly 618,000 votes.

In Michigan, an initiative led primarily by young Arab and Muslim organizers launched a campaign to encourage Democrats to vote unconditionally as a protest vote.

They are urging Biden to immediately call for a permanent and stable ceasefire in Gaza and to stop sending American aid to Israel. This comes nearly five months after the attacks on Israel by Hamas on October 7, which claimed the lives of 1,200 individuals, with casualties in Gaza reaching nearly 30,000 since then.

Abbas Alawiye, a spokesperson for Michigan Democrats and a campaign strategist, said at a watch party in Dearborn, Michigan, “We have led a movement that is more than expectations, urging America to stop killing our families with impunity. You are asking. Just stop killing our families,” he continued.

Dearborn is central to this movement, where over half the population identifies as of Middle Eastern or North African descent.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud said at a watch party Tuesday night, “This coalition wants to bring morality back to this country because somewhere, we’ve lost it.”

He said, “We (elected officials) won’t do this in this primary election, but we’ll campaign to bring it back in November.”

The campaign aimed to secure over 10,000 votes, significantly more than the number of uncommitted votes received in the 2016 primary, when former President Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, despite a decrease in voter turnout compared to the re-election of former President Barack Obama. Efforts also indicate a significant number of people who voted unconditionally for the president, nearly 600,000, despite this being a largely uncontested primary. This vote percentage is better than in 2012.

In previous presidential primaries, Michigan received thousands of uncommitted votes. For comparison, in 2012, over 20,000 people in Michigan chose to vote without commitment. This time, the number is close to 101,000.

Additionally, in 2008, as part of a movement supporting Obama’s candidacy, over 238,000 people voted without commitment, who were not part of the state’s primary vote.

Especially, Biden’s opposition to handling Gaza could affect Arab and Muslim voters. In a December poll by The New York Times/Siena College, Biden received significant disapproval from voters under 30 for his handling of the issue.

Youth voters can play a crucial role in the 2024 election. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University, during the midterm in 2022, Michigan had the highest voter turnout among voters under 30 compared to any other state.

Just a day after Biden’s announcement, it was possible that an interim ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could be reached by Monday.

Alawiye said in a statement to NPR Monday night, “We hope that long-overdue war cessation negotiations will be concluded on a humanitarian basis as soon as possible.” However, he emphasized that the campaign’s goal is to publicly call for a permanent ceasefire.

For other organizers behind the campaign, Tuesday’s election results were not about victory.

Spokesperson Lexis Zidan said ahead of primary day, “This is really the top of the mountain. There are people under this tent who are waiting for [Biden] to change his program. And there are people who kicked him out in November, but they still have faith in the Democratic Party. And I think that’s really important.”

At a watch party in Dearborn, supporters gathered enthusiastically as results came in.

State representative Abraham Ayyash, a vocal supporter of the movement, looked ahead and observed the Democratic National Convention, saying, “We’re going to Chicago, now, 174 days from now, we’re going to join the Democratic National Convention, we’re going to boost and raise this anti-war movement,” Ayyash predicted.

“Maybe they’ll hear Michigan,” he expressed hope.
